Hi Guys
I enjoyed the Monday lesson. While some of you were trying to pronounce my countries name "Botswana" and most of you got it right. Anywhere Im still struggling with this phonemes cause english is my second language and the last time I recall doing them was 12 years ago while I was still at high school.

Snow Week

Hey,

I hope that everyone has enjoyed their snow week and was careful from all of the falling trees and branches. I know that some people were out of power for the week and hope everyone stayed warm. I was thankful that I stayed in the dorm because we had electricity and power, it wasnt fun sitting in the dorm all week though not being able to go anywhere. Hope everyone is prepared to go back. Ill see everyone then!

My last post and a question

So this is the last post I have to do right now to get credit for all four posts this month. I promise in the future guys I will develop better blog posts, and not procrastinate until the last day to post all of them. So here is a question I am confused on, " Speech can be communication, but communication can not be speech". Is this statement correct ? I thought I heard Mrs. White say this in class, but I'm not sure. Will someone please explain this to me ?

SNOW !!

Hey SED 260,
I hope everyone has enjoyed the winter break we have had this week ! This ice and snow has been crazy. I live out of town and thought it would be a good idea to stay in a hotel, so I could get to school and back. However, I didn't anticipate the hotel loosing their power as well. This week has sucked. I ended up having to go stay in Lexington at the only hotel with vacancies...the Radisson. It turned out to be much more fun staying in Lexington than Richmond. At least in Lexington you can get a hotel with room service. Later guys

Question about blogging

Hey SED 260,

I have a question about posting blogs. I know we have to use this blog... but do we have to post 4 questions a month, or does a comment to another blog count as 1 of our four times ? I guess since I don't know I will go ahead and post some more questions. However, if someone could let me know I would be very thankful.

Confusion

Ok guys I am super confused about all this pragmatic stuff, I am going to need some help, I really hope that Mrs. White goes over it more on Monday, this stuff if hard!!!

SNOW

Can u believe that we have been out of school for a week, it feels like forever and a half, I have gotten more sleep this week than in my entire life!! LOL anyway I just wanted to make sure everyone was safe, and careful trees are still falling down!!! So please be careful and stay warm catch ya'll in class Monday!!

Morphemes

Sometimes it is difficult for me to determine how many morphemes a word has. Basically, if part of the word can stand as its own word, then that part is a morpheme, but if the rest of the word cannot stand on its own, then there is only one morpheme in the word. Is this right? Also, if there are two morphemes in a word, the morphemes do not have to be related to the word that they create together. Such as "window." If anyone wants to correct this or add to it feel free, I am easily confused by morphemes.

Pragmatics

Pragmatics using language or communicating your thoughts to get what you to accomplish. This is making sure that the words are in the correct order and that the person understands what you want.

Semantics

Semantics is the meaning of words. Whether or weather.

Syntax

Syntax is the rule of words. Such as noun, verb, etc.

Morphemes

Morphemes are what each word means. Whether they can be broken down if they are compound words that are related or if just the single word itself.

Phonemes

Phonemes are ths sounds each letter makes like the letter p makes the "puh" sound.

Mrs. White has asked me to post several sections about what we have been trying to learn. Speech is the sound.
Language communicates a shared code.
Communication is exchanging information.
She would like us to communicate information about these.

Well it feels like I haven't been to class in forever since last week we didn't have class. After reading some posts I feel kind of lost. I love snow but I don't like being behind in class work. Anyways... maybe I'll see you guys tomorrow!

Should I be taking Sign Language?

Hi, my name is Kristina Nickson and my major is Spec. Ed LBD/ Elem Ed P-5. My advisor told me I did not have to talk sign language and so last semester I took CDF 232 and now I am taking WGS 201 which is a substitute for sign language or a second language. The problem that I had was when I went on my taskstream is shows a column for ASL classes for me to post materials. So I am wondering if I am exposed to be taking ASL courses and I have been wasting useless classes. I tried to explain this to my advisor but she did not explain it to me very well. I also don't think she understood what I was talking about with taskstream. Everyone knows that for certain classes you are to post some of your work on taskstream to be in your portfolio and it list courses that you are to take for your major and my does list the ASL course. If anyone is a Spec Ed. LBD/Elem Ed. P-5 major and knows what I am talking about or has had this problem please write a comment on this blog. Thanks so much!

OMG

Man last night was a little different for me, I did realize that the way we talk is a lot more complicated then I thought AGH!!!!!!!
Anyway, I know I am going to have some problems, so if anyone wants to start a study group I am in just let me know when and where lol.
Also I kept getting distracted by all the ASL in the room, that fascinates me to know end and I want to learn it so bad, it is so cool and I just wanted to know what meant what I can not wait to take ASL next semester!!!! Ok also I know everyone was thinking it so I am going to say it, Josh was super hot lol and knowing he had a twin made him so much hotter. If this embarress anyone please let me know lol

I finally figured out how to work this thing. A little late I know. My name is Dani Wilkerson. I am a freshmen. I found what we talked about on Monday very interesting. The one question I had was how do they teach deaf students to speak. I am in ASL right now and he is deaf but he still can talk to us and he is very clear. If anyone knows the answer to this that would be awesome.

Phonemes

So, last night I discovered that I don't quite understand phonemes. While reading the chapter, I understood that they are the "smallest unit of sound that can differentiate meaning" or they're the sounds of words. But last night, Mrs. White had us say certain words like "think, the, thankful, Cathy" to understand the difference between th (underlined) and th. I still don't understand. If anyone has a way of explaining this to me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hey guys! I wanted to post and tell a little bit about myself like everyone else has been. My name is Mary Beth and I am a sophomore here at EKU. I'm a Special Education major emphasis in Elementary Ed, and I have a minor in American Sign Language. I am not from Kentucky like the the majority of you, I hail from North Carolina. Got scholarship money to come and wanted the experience of going to school in a new state. I love traveling and have been to both South America and Africa. I love learning about different cultures and learning new languages. I am excited about being in this class and I hope in the end that I get a lot out of it!

I hope you all had a lovely weekend! Since this is my first post, I guess I'll tell you a little about myself... well, my name is Mackenzie, and I'm always happy. I rock climb everyday and am an instructor at the EKU climbing wall, so anyone interested in climbing-- I'm your girl! I am on the EKU climbing and skydiving teams. I love being outdoors, and am definitely a Kentucky girl-- 4wheeling, paintballing, mudding, truck pulling, riding bareback, shooting guns and bow, cliff jumping... you name it! I'm an LBD English major, but going for my masters in Educational Psychology. I am an Adoption Support for Kentucky spokesperson and travel the state speaking to foster parents and children. I love to help people so if anyone needs anything at all, don't hesitate to let me know! Sorry if I've bored you, but I'm looking forward to this class and hopefully getting to know everyone better! A Quick Question

NO WEDNESDAY CLASS 1-21-09

This is RARE - RARE - RARE for me! I am cancelling class because I am sick. I am running a fever and feel TERRIBLE. I may feel better by tomorrow - but it's not worth the risk for those who drive and need some advance warning.

Hi everyone! My name is Heather Hyatt, and I am in Mrs. White's Wednesday night class. I am a junior here at Eastern, and I recently changed my major from Ele. Education to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education with a minor in ASL. I love my classes so far, but I feel as if I am somewhat behind from my fellow peers. I am from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. I have lived there all my life, and if you have never heard of it I would not be surprised. I cannot wait to graduate, and begin my work and life as an educator, hopefully within the state of Kentucky!

Taskstream help!!!

I have set up my taskstream folder for my education portfoilio, but I was wondering what articles some of the students within this class has placed within the teaching standards. I have lots of papers that I have kept from my education classes and such, but I am at a loss for words at where to place these documents within the folders of teaching standards. Hello Everyone!

So I'm a freshman from London, Ky where I attended South Laurel. While I was at South Laurel I played basketball and baseball. Also i was the president of inspired livings which was a club where regular high school students got to interact with the students in the special education classroom. I want to be a FMD( functional mental disorder) teacher. I really enjoyed my first SED class but I'm thinking this one is going to be a little bit more difficult since it is almost 3 hours long. But Mrs. White seems very energetic and down to earth which should be good to keep our attentions all three hours. Well thats about all i got to say!

Well i cant really tell you where I'm from because that would be a really long list of places, my father is in the US Army and Ive lived all over the world and I came here from Germany! Concerns for SED 260??

So I was just wondering if you guys have any concerns for this class?? I've never had a night class before so I'm wondering how it will compare to other classes that I have mulitple times a week. I'm also nervous because this is one of the first special ed. classes that is actually specific to a certain aspect of special ed. I've taken a few others and they were just basic over views. I look forward to getting to know everyone while learning a lot throughout the next semester.

Question about Communication

I have a question about communication. On the slides it says that in order to have communication there must be the intent to communicate. However, it is also true that facial gestures and body language can communicate messages. I often show exactly what I am thinking by the look on my face, even when I do not intend to. So, when I do this have I not communicated anything because I did not intend to, even though someone has received a message from me? Or am I interpreting this wrong?

Hey! My name is Samantha Riffle and Im from Cincinnati, Ohio. I am a freshman and am loving being here at Eastern so far. I am really excited for this class because I cant wait to learn everything I need to one day become a special ed teacher. Hi Everyone! My name is Katlyn Chappel. I go by Katlyn at school because there are usually a lot of people with the name Katie and Kate, but, my friends call me Katie. I graduated from Montgomery County High School last spring. I have been signing since I was in the 5th grade and it is my passion. My major is difficult to understand because for what I want to do there is not a specific major. So I am majoring in Special Education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with a emphasis in chemistry and also majoring in ASL. After college I want to teach ASL as a foreign language in high schools or teach chemistry at a School for the Deaf. Maybe both who knows! I am very excited for this class. Needing Prayers

Hey everyone! Usually I do not do this, but......
I am asking anyone willing to pray for me and my family. I just found out that my grandpa has lung cancer. Unfortunately, we have to wait a couple of weeks to see if it is isolated in his lungs or if it began somewhere else. I have lost 2 of my 4 grandparents within the past couple of years and am now facing the possibility that I may loose another soon.

Interesting Class

Hi everyone, I'm looking foward to the experiences that this class will bring. I am currently employed at a high school and work in the EBD unit there, so anything that I can learn from Mrs. White or the students in this class will be put to good use. After last nights class I'm positive that this experience will make me a better communicator with not only the kids I work with but the my colleagues at work as well.

Speech vs Language

Speech mostly refer to oral communication or sound being produced oral it can make sense to the listener or not, language has long been closely associated with reason, sequence and sytematical arranging of words.

Normally my instructors just go over the boring syllabus..but in this class I enjoyed all of the class participation. I hope this class continues to keep my attention night after night!

Internet "speak" and language?

I was just mulling this over in class, but does anybody believe that the "voice" people use online carries over into their life? I've heard of some people using "text names" for their children (such as An instead of Anne, Conna instead of Conner, etc.). Think there's any correlation?
