Field Trip

When we were going over the class schedule on Monday, I noticed that we have a class "field trip" to Lexington to the Bluecgrass Technology Center on Monday, March 16th. I meant to ask Mrs. White about it Monday, but it slipped my mind. Does anyone know what this is about?? Just curious.

  1. It is this really neat place where we will get to have HANDS ON experience with assistive technology devices. Instead of showing you a Power Point with pictures of devices students can use we will go there to SEE it.

What type of "devices" come to your mind when I mention "assistive technoloyg?"

  2. Are assistive devices like the computer boards that a student types on and it speaks what is typed?

  3. Yes, this is one example.

  4. I volunteered there last sememster. I adapted books for children. I read the books and wrote questions that you could ask the student after reading the book.

  5. Just out of curiosity, are we going to be car pooling on our field trip?

  6. The center does have a great Adapt-A-Book project they are doing right now among the many other things they do. We will learn more about it while we are there. You'll also learn about a SURPRISE OPPORTUNITY while you are there as well.

Absolutely I would encourage any of you interested in car pooling to do so. You can use the blog to arrange this if you'd like. I'll be coming from Frankfort so I will simply meet you there. We'll discuss more specific arrangements as to time, directions, (eating afterward if anyone is interested - some folks from some classes have chosen to do this) closer to that week.

  8. The "class" at the Bluegrass Tech Center always begun at 6:30 and concluded at 8:00 since people have to drive to Lexington. This has always worked well for students in the past.

  10. I have really bad rider's anxiety and I wouldn't be comfortable riding with anybody except for my husband. (I rarely even drive). So, do you think he'll be able to just come on the trip too?

  11. Yea I also volunteered last semester at the Blugrass Technology Center for another SED course.. A couple of classmates and myself scanned and formatted books to be readable and viewable on computers for children with special needs!

  12. Last semester I learned about a few assistive technological devices. Especially ones that help people with blindness or low vision. Some of these included braile notetakers, screen readers, voice mates, laser canes, and GPS devices. For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, we talked about devices such as hearing aids, telephone adaptions such as relay systems, and captioning. Am I on the right track?

  13. I am ready for our field trip, because it has been so long since I have been on one. Plus a change is always nice.
If anyone would like to ride with me from campus on that Wed. that would be cool with me!
