Phonemes
So, last night I discovered that I don't quite understand phonemes. While reading the chapter, I understood that they are the "smallest unit of sound that can differentiate meaning" or they're the sounds of words. But last night, Mrs. White had us say certain words like "think, the, thankful, Cathy" to understand the difference between th (underlined) and th. I still don't understand. If anyone has a way of explaining this to me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok. Thanks for this explanation. I may be understanding a little now. If we are going to cover this in a later chapter, then I won't be as concerned about it now. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteWell, this gives me a better idea of what to expect tomorrow night. Of course that is if we have class. =]
ReplyDeleteSpeech production is actually in chapter 3 - so it's just next week.
ReplyDeleteJust remember this is a "survey" class. You will get the "highlights" of several of these concepts in class and in the text.
The concepts we'll cover in depth in this class will be syntax, semantics and pragmatics of language. All of the other concepts are the supporting characters or material. At ANY time I'd be happy to go over it with you one on one or in small groups. But, I will do my best to keep the class focused on the MAIN IDEAS so you will complete the course with a firm understanding of the major elements of LANGUAGE.
Mrs. White
PS - The key is to continue to ask questions and not expect to know and understand everything fully in Week 2, 3 or 4. Master it in chunks.
I do not know what a "survey" class is. Does this mean just bits and pieces.
ReplyDeleteSorry I do not want to seem dumb but if I do not know I will ask.
Check out Jennifer Lowe's blog post. She pretty much cleared it up for me, because I was a little confused myself. Hope it helps!
