Should I be taking Sign Language?
Hi, my name is Kristina Nickson and my major is Spec. Ed LBD/ Elem Ed P-5. My advisor told me I did not have to talk sign language and so last semester I took CDF 232 and now I am taking WGS 201 which is a substitute for sign language or a second language. The problem that I had was when I went on my taskstream is shows a column for ASL classes for me to post materials. So I am wondering if I am exposed to be taking ASL courses and I have been wasting useless classes. I tried to explain this to my advisor but she did not explain it to me very well. I also don't think she understood what I was talking about with taskstream. Everyone knows that for certain classes you are to post some of your work on taskstream to be in your portfolio and it list courses that you are to take for your major and my does list the ASL course. If anyone is a Spec Ed. LBD/Elem Ed. P-5 major and knows what I am talking about or has had this problem please write a comment on this blog. Thanks so much!

The only thing I know to tell you since I have the same major is my advisor just told me that I need to take two different forien languages and ASL could count as one. At the sametime though if I wanted I could of taken Spanish. I hope that kind of helps. Sorry if it doesnt.
ReplyDeleteI am a Special Ed LBD major and Elementary p-5 and I only have to take 2 "foreign language" classes but they both have to be for the same language. Like 2 ASL classes or 2 spanish. I am taking ASL because I believe it will be the most beneficial when working with any special needs children who communicate that way, plus my spanish is more than adequate for communicating so I didn't want to waste more time taking excess spanish classes. So go ahead and take ASL, just 2, and you'll be done with that block. But you don't HAVE to take ASL, you can take whatever language EKU offers to fill that block.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Special Ed minor, but have spent a lot of time in the Special Education community. I would suggest taking ASL if you want to because it will always come in handy at some point in your career.
ReplyDeleteI would advise you to take an ASL class. I grew up in Danville and always regretted not taking any of them. They help when you are in the work force. If you are working and someone comes in that is deaf you can help them. Also you can teach the children that you will work with some basic sign language to help them if they come across someone who is deaf.
ReplyDeleteI am wondering the same question. I hear from many special education teachers that it would be very very useful if you knew ASL. I personally saw how it was incorporated into classrooms, and strongly recommend taking it at some point. I am planning on taking it next fall.
ReplyDeleteI am also the same major and am currently taking asl 101. It's definitly a different learning enviornment but i really like it. Goodluck with whatever you decide to do.
ReplyDeleteI also have the same major and I took ASL 101 and 102. I loved every minute of it :)
ReplyDeleteI am also in the same boat as you. My advisor pretty much told me the same thing. I believe I will take ASL vs Spanish or any of the other foreign language classes offered only because I think it will benifit me more since I will be working in Special Education.
