Reading Response

Please submit your Reading Responses ELECTRONICALLY. I will accept them in hard copy. But, I do prefer they are submitted via Blackboard. It makes it much easier for me for grading purposes.

These are due at 6:00 on the night of your class. I know some of the Wednesday night students are planning on attending Monday night's class this week due to the President's Ball or other factors. If you're typical night to attend is Wednesday then your response isn't due until Wednesday at 6.

I will have these graded and included in your Mid-term grades!! (Did I just say that?) So, thanks for those who have turned theirs in early. Yes! Someone has already submitted theirs.

questions and concerns

Looking forward to meeting on Sunday so that I can firm up questions I have on the project. I feel like I need alittle more direction with it. See you at 6. Again thanks for helping us out with what we missed not being at Wed. class. P.S. concerns are test score and length project should be.

countdown to post time!

I thought I had until midnight tonight to post, I maybe wrong. I tend to wait until the last minute because I never know what to say, I'm even worse when it comes to text messages....my son who is a junior at UK and says I need to abbreviate my words...he says he doesn't have time to read a book! Oh well, I'm old...and I am trying, that should count for something, right!

Thank you Mrs. White

I promise to improve and practice my computer skills everyday! Thanks for the reset!
I guess while being struck with this nasty virus I developed password memory loss! I must write these things down in the future.

Posts due Friday??

So I saw that Ms.White said the posts should be done by Friday 27.... Is this true? I was thinking we had through Feb to finish February's blogs. Ms. White, or Fellow classmates... Did You (she) just get the date wrong? : ) ok, thats it! Thanks!

Language Project Meeting - SUNDAY at 6:00

I have heard from a few students in email and a few here on the blog that they are interested in getting together on Sunday. Some are in Lexington. Some are in Richmond. Some are from neither place.

I am suggesting we ALL meet about 6:00 (am still flexible on this if you want to suggest a different time). We will discuss the project together. Then if individuals want to talk to me about their project separately people can stay after.

The question is . . . do you want to meet in Lexington at Calistogas in Hamburg (it has free wireless) or do you prefer to meet in Richmond? If you want to meet in Richmond just suggest a place that has wireless. I'm "classroomed" out so pick a place where I can sit down, be comfortable and order a coffee.

I think there will be at least 5 or 6 of us - maybe more.

gain your awareness

Test ?

Hey Mrs. White,
I was just wondering when you are planning on grading the rest of the tests. I know it's basically my own fault that i didnt turn it in till monday but i am getting really anxious. I have been checking everyday a few times a day since monday! I'm not trying to rush you cause id rather you take your time !

Lang. Assessment for the D/HH

I was curious about language assessment for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. When we talked about the language sample and we all discussed about kids who could hear and talk. But what about children who are profoundly deaf and do not have speech? How do you assess their language? I know ASL has its own grammar and syntax from English so I was just curious if anyone knew or had any thoughts. And I know that there is some language delay depending on the decibal loss of each child.

Josh's Question

So Josh asked me if being in all those places help me find out what I want to do with me life. Well like any childhood I grow up thinking I was going to be something big and make lots of money. But being apart of the army made me think about the little jobs that make a big difference. For me when 9/11 happened it was like the whole world didnt really care about the army, it was just another job. But after our world was turned up side down everyone had American flags up and things on there cars about supporting the troops, yet when our world isnt in trouble people say we shouldnt have an amry. The army is the little people that do big jobs and for me a teacher is the same way. Teachers are one of the greatest jobs yet not alot of people appreciate what they do. Every country I have ever been to has a school and in that school there are teachers. So i guess the answer to your question is yes being able to see everything in this great world showed me what i was supposed to be.

Monday Assignment

I did not understand what should be done concerning the assignment which is due on monday. Is it copy and paste or application. help!!!

Language Project - Analyzing Skills

Last week in class we went over the Analysis of Form/Syntax in depth in class. We will go over EACH type. For form/syntax you analyz the child's grammar and look at transitive, intransitive and equative clauses. You will also analyze the grammatical morphemes. We will go over those in more depth as well.

If you choose to analyze the child's Pragmatic abilities you will be looking at the following skills. What do the following terms/skills mean to YOU? What do you do to use these in conversations?

Language Project - MORE INFO

Several people had to miss class this week due to illness, family emergency, etc. Others may just want to have a REPEAT of "What's The Language Project Entail?" If there is anyone who is interested in getting together this weekend - preferably Sunday evening I will do a Coffee Session. I'll do this for one or 11 - the number doesn't matter - I just need a response.

I'll email this out as well - respond here or in email and let me know if you're interested. Depending on the number we'll pick a restaurant in Richmond if that's the most central place. Depending on WHO responds if Lexington is more central then since I live here we may meet in Hamburg.

I'll bring the handouts and my laptop. You bring your brains.

Group assignment?

Hey guys I wasn't able to make it to class on Wed. because I was sick and I was informed that we went over the group assignment. Can anyone fill me in on what this assignment is over? Thanks

Monday night students

I am in the Wednesday night class, but I am going to the Presidents Ball, which is also Wednesday night. Class runs until after it has started so I am going to Monday night's class instead. Which room do you all meet in? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Wed nights class.

I was a little worried about the language project and the article response, but after class last night I feel more comfortable with my ability to complete both. Mrs. White really helped me understand the criteria we need to cover in the language project. The way we outlined what to do and what not to do really gave me emphasis on where to get started with the project. Going over the Transitive, Intrasitve and the Equative clauses really helped me understand how to calculate the utterances. I really enjoyed the material covered in class last night.

2/25/09

Transitive, Intransitive, and Equative

I am having trouble understanding the differences between these three clauses. The examples given to us in class I understood, but I still do not completely understand. Could someone help me better understand?? I would really appreciate it!

SAVING!!!

While i was taking my test i saved the first 4 and was on number 8 of the test when i clicked on the video link. It went to the link and i watched it and when i returned to the test page the answers 5-7 were not there anymore and i had to redo every question again. Just letting everyone know that it is very very important to answer your question and then save your answer. :)

Activities for Language Sample

Hey Guys,

I was just curious as to what everyone else is considering doing for the activity during their language sample. I want to try and get something as natural as possible. Any suggestions??

Kayla =]

Case Closed

After monday class some of my concerns about the kids who are stammering were answered. A stammering kid can separate a word into two when talking. I have realised that when counting uttarances such word should be treated as one word. It is easy to identify a transitive or intrasive statement in a stammering. I got the answers before I could ask the professor.
Thanx.

Language Project

I was wondering if there was an specific length or time limit for the language project , i have looked over the information on blackboard but it doesn't tell a specific length, or atleast I haven't found it. Does anyone know where I can find it or if there is even a time limit. Thanks :)

Article Response

Has anyone tried to open up the documents on blackboard for the article response? I tried to but it said that there was an error. I was just wondering if other people were having problems or if it was just my computer?
Thanks!

Language Project

OK...I'm not sure if I am having a total blonde moment or what...hopefully I'm in good company though! :) I am a bit confused on wheter or not we need to work with a child with a language disability that has been confirmed or if we can just work with a young child that may not have a language disability. Can someone clarify this for me?

Also, I just wanted to let everyone know that my grandfather is doing ok. He definately has lung cancer, but the mass that they found in his colon has not been identified as cancer, so that is good. Unfortunately, they are still unsure what the mass is and plan on operating on him within the next couple of weeks. I just wanted to give you an update and say thank you so much for your prayers.

test

well i just sent my test last night and i'm really nervous for the feedback. i found some of the questions difficult to answer for some reason. but it was the 1st test so i guess i'll know what to expect for the tests to come.

2/23/09

TEST!!!!

OK that test kicked my butt!!!! I really worked hard on it too and I still bombed it!!!!!! I was so excited about how good I thought I did and still. . . . . *cries* today has been a really bad day for me, this is the second test I thought I did well on and bombed!!
I worked on this test with a friend, and we re-wrote our answers several times before we decided that it was the right one. I don't know what to do anymore. . . . . I am tired, so tired of working my butt off and getting no results, anyone else feel this way?
I want to help children so bad, I want to be a light for them when there seems to be only darkness, I used to struggle a lot when I was younger and I had this amazing teacher who wanted to help me improve, she schedule study sessions with me, and really worked with me to help me learn; and that is what I wanted to do for the children I taught. But now i don't know, my faith in myself is diminishing slowly!! I need a boost of some sort! Does anyone remember what Mrs. White said about how to set up a conference with her, I need to discuss my grade?
Thanks for just listening to me be down guys, some times I just need to write my feelings down!! Sorry to have played pity party, I will we OK!! See you all in class tonight!
Peace, love, and chicken grease LOL :)

Question for test

I know in class it was stated that we will need to compare and contrast without defining and describing, I am so used to doing that way that I just dont understand how not to. I dont want to answer completely wrong and the way that is not wanted of me. Can anyone help?

Help The Teacher?

As many of you know I am currently taking an online course called, Teaching for Understanding through the Harvard Graduate School of Education. It's kickin' my butt! One of MY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS this week is:

Ask students or your colleague the questions you answered in assignment 1.2 (What is something you understand really well? How did you come to understand it? And how do you know you understand it?)

If any of you would like to share...I'd love to hear from you. What is something YOU understand really well? How did you get to understand it so well? Just how is it you KNOW you understand it?

I look forward to learning more about some of you and what you understand . . . not to mention having YOU help ME with MY HOMEWORK!

Test 1

Test one was pretty difficult for me, probly because I was not at class as much as I would have liked to be. Due to some issues I missed some good class points, but hopefully all that stuff is over. Mrs. White grades pretty tough but the feedback was great! I like how straight foward and direct the it was. I won't make those same mistakes again.

Really Confused

So are we allowed to open the test and look it over and then go back and take the test ? If anyone has some insight that could help I would be eternally grateful. I pay attention in class and I am still lost on what the test is going to be over. I know to read about Brooner and Chomsky, but what else to do I need to study ? This test is scaring the hell out of me.. Somebody help tutor me or something, and I will pay you !! No, Mrs. White I am not paying for answers just assistance on what to study, because its Sunday night and I am still lost on what to do.

2/22/09

Test

Did anyone else's test not let them type in the answer slot for the last question?

MLU

I am completely lost the importance of calculating the MLU. I don't understand how that will be an important tool to use as a teacher. Will somebody help me to understand? Thanks!

Children stammer because of fear

I got a family friend whose child is stammering. Instead of just ordering the child to study, the parents spend some time with the child, expressing their affection and his acceptance, irrespective of his achievements. Cann't this low the child performance, self esteem and self confidence? Researchers' noted that some children stammer because of fear.

2/21/09

I am working on the test!

I have given my autistic daughter Megan some washable markers and pastel paper and told her that her assignment was to create 2 wonderful works of art! This will give me a solid hour to work on the test, I am so excited! With a special needs child in the family everything is a challenge but the experience is great!

Stammer

Is stammering part of language disorder?

Language Analysis Project

Ok so I was really sick last monday night and was not able to make it to class. I am still very confussed about what we are suppose to do on the Language Analysis project. I heard that she talked about it a little in class. If anyone could clear this up for me that would be awesome. Also when will this project be due?

Field Trip transportation

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone would be riding together for the field trip on Wed.or wanted to, I'm not real good with directions, as long as I have the GPS I'll probably be good. Let me know if anyone would want to, I'll be coming from Danville way so we could even meet in Danville . Thanks

2/20/09

Field Trip

It says on the syllabus that we are supposed to be going on a field trip?? Does anyone know anything about this. . . . . . .it might be a good idea for me to check the rest of the blog huh? lol well ok I will do that but if someone wants to let me know it would be more helpful lol ;)

P.S. wow it looks like I am talking to myself!!!!!

Test

Hey guys
I worked on the test with a friend and niether of us have submitted it yet, we found that it is so much easier to write you answers in a notebook so you can look them over, add to them, and fix them if something occurs to you later. I will be submitting my final test tonight before I leave for my church retreat! I hope this tid-bit helps anyone!! :)

Good Luck!!!

Mrs. White

Hey I just wanted an update on your dad. I know dealing with a loved one being sick is hard. I lost my grandfather to lung cancer during finals last semester. Christ hospital, depending on the nurses is a great place. Last year when my grandmother was in ICU there all 8 of her kids decided to stay the night in the ICU waiting room, The entire week or so that she was in there. You would have to know my family to know how comic this is but lets just say by the end of the week the hospital staff kicked them out and said that they were no longer allowed to sleep there anymore. They had it to the point where they took mattresses off of empty beds that were lying in the hallways and everything.

2/18/09

Mrs.White

you said you went to a Bible College, how was that?

Test is open

If we open the test can we save it and return later? I was going to start working on it but was scared that I would not be able to return later.

2/17/09

Monday Night Field Trip

I saw on the schedule that we're going to the Bluegrass Technology Center on Monday. I assume we're not doing that because nothing was said about it. If anyone knows for sure let me know. Thanks :)

Wednesday Night's Class- TEST

I read thru the previous posts and I dont believe that this question has been asked. Could someone please tell me when Wednesday nights class test will be open and when it needs to be compleated by?! Thanks in advance!

2/15/09

Study Group For Monday night class

Does anyone from the Monday night class want to start a study group to prepare for our test that is due next week?

2/14/09

Study Group

I am really nervous about the first test! I get nervous with the first test in every class. Would anyone from Wednesday night like to start a study group?

2/11/09

1st Test

I was looking over the Monday night class schedule and it says that we have an online test that is needs to be completed before the next class on the 16th. Does anyone know if we will still be having this test, even though class was cancelled for this week??

Just wondering!! If so I need to kick the studying into overdrive!! =]

Kayla

Wed. Night Class

Hey everybody, I'm at work and this is the last time I'll be able to be online before leaving for class at 4.. If something happens with the weather and class is canceled... Someone please text me and let me know so I don't drive an hour and a half there (606-303-1053) Otherwise I'll see everyone at class tonight. Drive safely.

Calculating MLU

I know that to calculate MLU you divide the number of morphemes the child says by the number of utterances they say. One question I have about this is how do you determine the number of utterances a child says? Does an utterance end when there is a pause in their speech? Maybe this is easier to understand when you are actually listening to a child talk. Just wondering if anyone could help.

groups

i really hope we get to work in groups some more tonight. i know that it helps me understand this information alot easier.

2/10/09

GUITAR

Mrs White,

When would you like me to bring my GETAR (lol) in and play a song for the class

The field trip

If I am correct we are going on a field trip. Where are we going?

Mrs. White's Dad

Mrs. White:

Just wondering how your dad is doing? How the surgery went? I know that we have all been thinking about you over the last 24 hours and please know that you are in all of our daily thoughts and prayers. Take care and hope to see you Wednesday night.

Andrea Cass

2/9/09

Monday Night Class IS CANCELLED

I have received word that my father will have surgery at 4:00 this afternoon. I am unable to get someone to teach the class for me this evening. Therefore, tonight's class IS CANCELLED.

I would encourage you to take the time to post questions and ideas about the models of language acquisition on the blog to allow us to discuss them and deepen our understanding of them. I will have my LAPTOPS with me and be in the waiting room on WIFI.

Just be glad I'm not making us do an ONLINE CLASS with me in the waiting room - and you in your living rooms or dorm rooms or library!

Actually . . . if anyone's online tonight . . . ;) I might just show up in Blackboard somewhere!!!

Thanks for your prayers!

Prayers & Thoughts for My Family

I would appreciate your thoughts and prayers for my family. On Thursday night my mom had to have the life squad take my father to Christ hospital in Cincinnati. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit. I have been at the hospital during the weekend but am back in Lexington. My dad is going to have to have surgery either tomorrow or Tuesday. Your prayers for him are much appreciated.

I WILL BE IN CLASS TOMORROW NIGHT or someone WILL BE TEACHING FOR ME - Class is NOT cancelled.

Blog grades will be posted in Blackboard later this evening. If there is a mistake with your grade EMAIL ME your posts or question and we will make it right.

Thanks for your support!

Mrs. White

Late Saturday Night

O.K. look closely at my last post and discover my grammatical errors! Shame on me.....I guess it is really past my bed time so I will post on Sunday! Also my autistic daughter loves Starfall and we spend hours on that web site. She really enjoys it. We did the "spell game" and I can't get the song out of my head! (SPELL....that's the way we SPELL....SPELL.......)

Andrea Cass

Wednesday night class

I really learned a lot. It was very helpful to me to break down in groups and listen to other students interpretations and understanding of the material that you were presenting. It is interesting to me how each of us absorb and process information differently.

Telling more

Eroupe

Mrs.White asked me to tell more about my life as an amry brat so i thought i would take the day and tell everyone about it. Well Ive been to alot of places in eroupe. Its fun when you have to take your passport just to play a sport game. If i had to pick anywhere in the world to go to again it would be Greece, our senior trip was there and i fell in love with everything about it. Ive also been to Italy and now my minor is eroupean history thanks to all great historic things. London and Paris seems endless and they are also the only places in eroupe to have a mall so ordering on line is what i did in highschool not day trips to the mall. I had my senior prom in castel that Hitler had rebuilt for his wife. Ive been more places in life that i can ever dream of. Im so happy that I got to do all these things my life.

2/6/09

Reflection of Wed. nights class.

I really enjoyed class Wed. night and the way Mrs. White instructed. I enjoy working with classmates it makes the class more deisrable and fun to attend. Thy way we broke down language, speech and communication enabled me to understand the concepts alot better than just reading the terms. I also like the portion of class where we have the confirmer, example giver etc... Im looking forward to learning new concepts next week.. Have a great weekend!

Help!

After reading your comments (from my last blog), and most of the commentators shared the same sentiments with me I tend to disagree with the Book Author. In real life situation some people are reserved while others are hyper activite (talkative). Those are who reserved are always quite smile only half a second when you ask them a question they respond with only one word. These individuals can come different groups of families, born with a silver spoon or not. Maybe the researches ingored this point and picked reserved children from the low income families. How do someone answer such question during exams especially when some facts do not match. Do you write what is on the book or what you know. Most of the students who commented on this topic had first hand experiences

I'm Back

Hi everyone, I'm sorry that I haven't been at class for the last couple of weeks. First I was very ill and then the following week the storm kept me out of town because of the power outages, I had to stay at a relatives home. Our electricity came back on yesterday and after alot of cleanup things are almost back to normal. I no I have missed alot of good discussions but I look foward to next monday night.

Morphemic Analysis in History Class

See how this history teacher used MORPHEMES to help students understand VOCABULARY

2/4/09

I need to understand more

according to author S. J. Kuder, pg 34-36. He said children from upper class families develop language far large vocabulary than from low income families. He also talk about quality interact between high income families and their children, and Im tempted to think that parents from the lower income families have sub standard interaction with their children and they are specislist discipline. Does it mean that children from lower income class are always on misbeh......?I thought most of this children High income families spend most of their time with their nani's and lower income spend most their time with one of the parents. Respect the researcher's findings but I need more clarity on thi issue

This Week

I thought this week was really interesting. Although this is how I help teach my little brother to read, by spliting the words up I never imagined it would be so complicated when you really looked at it. I liked looking at it like a five year old haha. I think I got the hang of it Mrs. White seemed to do a good job of explaining it but I have a feeling we're not through the hardest part of laguage and this type of stuff yet, well see. On my way home the roads were getting kind of bad were they rough for anyone else? Stay safe and warm, Kristen

Reflecting on class today!

So tonight was very interesting to me, i had never really broke down words like MRs. White broke them down. The thing that really struck my attention was when she said, "We dont need to be overwhelmed with all the new information" and then later on said, " thats how students with special needs feel like a lot of the time"... But what did you think about today's class??

Question?

So i was just wondering Mrs. White are you going to explain the short hand code for syntax more cause its kinda confusing to me. But im excited to get back into class... See everyone tonight.
Jordan

And are we taking a break tonight or are we just going to teach the whole time?

wed night class

talked to mrs. white earlier and we are haveing class, driving to richmond via lexington from danville because everyone says 52 is bad.

Different Models from Monday's Class

During class on Monday we started talking about the different types of models associated with language acquisition and what they were about. For me it was kind of rushed and I didn't get a whole lot of information on the other models. Mrs. White said she was going to review it all again next Monday, but I was thinking that we could talk about it on here first, as a way to see what we do know about all of them, and what we still want to know or need to find out.

My group had Skinner's behavioral model. This model puts a lot of emphasis on the role of the environment in a child's language acquisition. It is thought that language is learned from parents, siblings and others that the child comes in contact with. Kids being with no language. Gradually they begin to imitate sounds made by people they are most frequently exposed to. My group thought the video that went best with this model was the first one about the twin boys. In the video one laughs and then the other one laughs too. They basically imitated what the other was doing.

Feel free to add to mine, or start a reply about the model that your group learned about.

Also, good luck with everything going on this week. I don't know about you guys, but it has been hard for me to get back in the swing of things after our 6 day weekend!! Have a great rest of the week =]

Wed nights class!

Is there any material we need to know for tonights class??

2/3/09

just a thought

i remembered when i was a little kid, there was a speech therapist explaining me how to understand the sounds; b vs p, th vs th, f vs v, c vs k, g vs k, etc. that time, i still dont know what those sound like but i did understand how it work by whether to blow the air or not. dont you all get this?

Two Weeks of No Class

Hey everyone,
I feel like so out of the loop of everything people discuss because we have not had class in two weeks. I am really excited for class on Wednesday because I feel like I will be completely caught up and will understand everything everyone is talking about on here. Am I correct that we are just to have read chapter one and two? I hope everyone had a great unexpected break and stayed safe and warm. See you all wednesday,
Samantha Riffle

2/2/09

Hey

So since we haven't been in class since like 4 years ago ha, what are we going to be doing wednesday in class?
