OK...I'm not sure if I am having a total blonde moment or what...hopefully I'm in good company though! :) I am a bit confused on wheter or not we need to work with a child with a language disability that has been confirmed or if we can just work with a young child that may not have a language disability. Can someone clarify this for me?
Also, I just wanted to let everyone know that my grandfather is doing ok. He definately has lung cancer, but the mass that they found in his colon has not been identified as cancer, so that is good. Unfortunately, they are still unsure what the mass is and plan on operating on him within the next couple of weeks. I just wanted to give you an update and say thank you so much for your prayers.

Hey Jenny,
ReplyDeleteI was actually a little confused about this myself. From what Mrs. White was saying, I think she means that we can have a child who has a confirmed language disability/delay or a child under the age of around 5 or 6 (because they are still developing langauge at this time.)
I think the reason that she wants us to work with either a child that has a disabilty/delay or a child with developing language is so we can get the most out of doing our language sample. What are we really learning about it if we already know that there are no problems, concerns, questions, etc.
I hope this helped. If I misinterpreted what Mrs. White was saying, someone please correct me!! I don't want to be doing the wrong thing either!! =]
Im not positive about this either, but I think Kayla is right about the project. It would make more sense and help better prepare the project if the child did have a language disability.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. The child needs to be within the DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES of language. How would you know this BEFORE you did the assessment???? Listen to the child talk for a while - you can get a pretty good idea.
ReplyDeleteBasic guideline...in most cases do your project with a child who is less than five years of age!!
If you know of a child who is older than 5 but it is obvious they have difficulty communicating then they would be a possible candidate for this project. Questions to consider in determining this... Does the child speak in complete sentences? Does the child have difficulty communicating his wants and needs known?
Thanks so much for the comments. This helps tremendously. I think maybe I was still having delays from being on a plane Sunday night.
