Reflecting on class today!

So tonight was very interesting to me, i had never really broke down words like MRs. White broke them down. The thing that really struck my attention was when she said, "We dont need to be overwhelmed with all the new information" and then later on said, " thats how students with special needs feel like a lot of the time"... But what did you think about today's class??

  1. We learned about breaking down words two Monday's ago. When Mrs. White said that is how students feel, I felt I could relate to them. It was alot of information to take in and somewhat confusing. Which is how students feel sometimes, I truly think we will gain alot of knowledge from this class. I'm very excited!

  2. Its interesting to put ourselves in the shoes of our Special Ed. students because I do not think that educators do this enough. We as the future educators obvisiously never really had to struggle to hard with school as a whole. Sure there was always one class or topic that we just did not get but these students just do not get the whole thing. When there is a basic break down in the foundation of the whole process such as communication between the student and the teacher then the student will have problems no matter what the topic or subject. Teacher rarely put themselves in the students place.

  3. The connections made in class to the real world really help me to understand the material. I agree with everything that has been said about relating to students that we will be teaching one day and how important it truely is. Mrs. White made a very good point as ya'll mentioned about how students in special education can constantly feel overwhelmed and want to give up. But we as future edcuators will continue to learn in order to help them and that is very exciting to me! =]

  4. I thought last night was interesting. I remember being in second grade and struggling with reading. I went to a different room during reading time to help me read more successfully. I remember my teacher helping me break down words for me to better understand how to say them. I was overwhelmed before class even started last night because we had missed two classes in a row, but after last night it was reassuring to know that we will get caught up on the missed information. And it is helpful to be in the shoes of a child in special education classes. It will definetly help us when we are the teachers trying to help these students understand what is being taught and how to make things less overwhelming and stressful on them.

  5. My youngest daughter went to a special reading group because she had difficulties transposing letters and sometimes words. I worked with her at home using morphemes and phonemes and did not know these terms. Having a child who was in special education helped me to decide that I wanted to work with these struggling children.
After last night, I am still a little confused but I think it will work out.

  7. I never really thought about how learning would be for a child with special needs. She really opened my eyes to what it was like for a struggling child. I really enjoyed Wednesday night's class.

  8. Yea, Mrs. White really allowed us to experience what it is like to learn as a special needs student. I had never really focused on breaking down a simple word with morphemes and how frustrating and complicating that can sometimes be. But I have a different respect for special education teachers after Wed. nights class!!
