MLU

I am completely lost the importance of calculating the MLU. I don't understand how that will be an important tool to use as a teacher. Will somebody help me to understand? Thanks!

  1. I do not understand this at all either. I have tried to figure out exactly what this is but Im having a lot of trouble! I tried to look over the paper given in class about the speech between the child and parent but am just not understanding. I think the whole thing with the utterances and morphemes and diving them and all that is what gets me. If someone has a very easy and great explination of MLU that would be AWESOME!

  2. I'd love for some of the students who had EXCELLENT answers on their tests to post and share their ideas. I read some OUTSTANDING ideas of how teachers would use this information. Have you looked at your book . . . pages 65-69ish?

  3. I have read over that section, but I don't understand how that will help me. I finally understood how to calculate it, but I don't understand why I need to know it. What use will this bring to me in communicating to individuals with disabilities?

  4. I just submitted my test, so I am not sure if this would be a correct answer or not. But I think that being able to calculate MLU would be a good tool for teachers because you would be able to determine what level of language development your student was on, and this would allow you to know if their language skills are developing at the rate they should be or if a intervention needs to take place to aide in the development of the childs language skills.
