Anyone using Pragmatics?

I had a question about it. I was wondering if when filling out the checklist if an utterance could fit into two of the skills if you put it in both or just the one it best fits into.

  1. All of the utterances would most likely demonstrate a child's ability to show turn-taking. Therefore, on this section of the chart you are going to make a comment about the child's ability to take turns in conversation or does he interupt frequently, etc.

We talked in class about how acknowledging would be addressed in the same way - comments rather than specific utterances because the child may frequently acknowledge the speaker. If a child does use specific language to demonstrate he is acknowledging what was said, "Uh huh" then certainly include that number within that section of the chart.

If there are other skills that you think demonstrate multiple skills I would certainly put it in each to note how the child demonstrates competency with that skill.

Remember . . . you are ANALYZING LANGUAGE . . . not playing school and completing a project. You are trying to determine what is this child able to do relative to participating in conversation. If the utterance shows competency in that skill - mark it. If you are unsure of the utterance and what it demonstrates then perhaps consider posting a few lines of your transcription on the blog and asking for help! :)
