Question to anyone about diagnosis.

About a year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Aspberger's Syndrome and since then things have gotten a lot better. I was wondering if a diagnosis has helped anyone with learning how to cope with their disorder. My mom and I have personal problems with my dad because us and my neuropsychologist believe he has it too but he refuses to get help. He does the same things I do to a worse extent. Has this ever happened to any of you?

  1. Allen, I have a friend who has a son with Aspberger's. I know it has helped him tremendously knowing how to provide the specific types of support his son needs. It has helped them recognize the many strengths and abilities he has and how to help him use them while coping with the challenges that he also encounters.

I think it is awesome you are willing to share with us your diagnosis.

  2. My brother was diagnosed FINALLY at the age of 17 with bi-polar manic depression. He did not want to receive the help that was there for him. It was difficult for him to know that there was something "wrong". He is now 36 and "deals" with it on a daily basis. He still refuses the treatment.
He now has a son that has some mental disabilities and refuses treatment for him as well. Some people just do NOT want to accept that there are problems. Your dad may be one of them.
I know that it is hard dealing with a loved one that refuses help. My dad also has some mental disabilities as well and refuses to go for help. The psychiatrists and other doctors that were trying to help my brother say that his problems were genetic. My dad could not accept that it was "his fault".
All I can tell you is to get the help you need. If you take care of yourself maybe your dad will come around.
